I live in a pretty small community here in southern Arizona. If any of you have been to the Gila Valley, you know just how small it is. More on the Gila Valley later. The incident I’m about to show you happened in the even smaller community of Morenci Arizona.

Greenlee County Fatal Shooting Details

The fatal shooting involved a dispute between Morenci resident Chris Ingram and his estranged wife. Chris had shown up to his sisters house expressing his frustrations about his wife and her desire for a divorce. Chris’s sister thought that he might have been drinking.

The siblings then found his estranged wife with another man, which, at that point, Chris told the sister that she had better leave because things were about to get bad.

Officers received calls reporting that Ingram was damaging their vehicle and becoming hostile. They pulled Ingram over and attempted to speak with him, when Ingram appeared to be crouching over to conceal something on his lap. Officer Mennen asked him to step out of the vehicle, then Ingram began to fire on Mennen, and then turned his fire to Sgt. Mingura.

Two officers were injured during a fatal shooting in Greenlee County Arizona which occurred in January 2015. The incident involved Dep. John Mennen of the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office and Clifton Police Sgt. Jason Mingura. 29 year old Chris Ingram died from gunshot wounds received after exchanging fire with the two officers on U.S. Highway 191.

Mennen was shot twice, once in the abdomen, shielded by his body armor, and once in the shoulder. Mingura was also shot twice, once in the hand and once in the buttocks.

Both officers survived the incident.

I’m not sure if this is going to help my reputation much, but for those of you who have seen the movie, “Pitch Perfect,” you’ll know what I mean when I mention “The Cup Song.”

Since that movie, teenage girls from around the globe have produced their renditions of this catchy little song. I guess it’s cool to know that you can create your own beat and sing at the same time. Heck, I’ve even caught myself singing it. (It’ll be hard to show my face in public now that I’ve admitted that)

I’m pretty sure every female under the age of twenty in my extended family has at some point performed “The Cup Song” in front of a live audience, at the latest family reunion or for hours at a time in their bedroom.

It’s a great pastime!

…and so is shooting guns! So, why not combine the two?

Check out the latest rendition of “The Cup Song” by Jim Huish of Ambers Drive.

AF2011-A1 Double Barrel PistolThe AF2011-A1 Double Barrel Pistol is the very first industrial double barrel pistol of all time. For those of you who love shooting the Colt 1911-A1, the AF2011-A1 was designed in commemoration of its legend. This bad boy packs a punch as a double barrel .45 caliber pistol and is extremely accurate. According to Arsenal Firearms, it will group all 16 bullets, held in a dual, single column magazine, in a target the size of an orange at 15 yards and in a watermelon at 15 yards. In around 3 seconds, with only 8 trigger pulls, you can fire 16 rounds into a target.

Man, if only Chuck Norris could get his hands on this collectors item. Then again, Chuck doesn’t need a gun!

The AF2011-A1 double barrel pistol has some pretty cool features.

  • Many of it’s parts are interchangeable with the 1911-A1, which makes repair and replacement parts cheaper, and more available. Interchangeable parts include the firing pins, recoil springs and rods, magazine bodies and inner parts, grips, sites, etc…
  • It has a single slide, single grip safety, single hammer and instead of two magazines, it’s a single column with dual magazines. So instead of having to load two single magazines, drop one and load one!
  • I read somewhere that it comes with the option to have the ability to fire each trigger separately as well as simultaneously. I didn’t see that option anywhere on the Arsenal Firearms website, so I’m just chalking that up to be a rumor.

AF2011-A1 Double Barrel PistolsMy first thoughts about a double barrel pistol were:

I’ve tried to pull the triggers of two pistols while holding them side by side. It’s not an easy thing to do. One trigger always gets pulled before the other. So I doubted even wanting to have the option to fire each trigger separately. However, by including two triggers, two barrels and one slide into this double barrel pistol, it automatically eliminates the struggle of holding two pistols side by side. However, if you want separate firing triggers, why not just use two pistols, which can each be pointed at their own targets? Sure, if the AF2011-A1 did come with the option to fire each barrel separately, you could probably pull the left trigger with your left hand and the right with your right hand.

This takes a whole new meaning to the term, “Dual Wielding!”

I think I’d rather have them fire at the same time, delivering twice the impact of a regular .45.

AF2011-A1 Double Barrel Pistol with HolstersDo the barrels fire straight or are the slightly angled in, toward each other? Maybe this proves my lack of engineering knowledge, but it was one of my first thoughts. If you think about hitting a target, you want to hit it dead center. With the double barrel pistol, you’ll always miss dead center and hit one round a little left and one a little right.

But then I realized, would you rather have two rounds enter an assailant through the same hole, or hit them twice…one on each side of his chest? I also wonder what the impact of two rounds would do to bullet proof vests if they were to hit within an inch or two from each other at exactly the same time? Would the vests hold up?

Answered my own question.

PLUS, think about the diversity here when choosing your rounds. You can load one side of the magazine with hollow point rounds while loading the other side with armor piercing rounds. It’ll get the job done one way or the other!

AF2011-A1 Double Barrel Pistol with MagazineIn closing, too many guns to buy and so little time! The AF2011-A1 double barrel pistol is definitely one to add to the collection.

Before you click away, you must, and I say MUST watch the video below. The first minute is sort of boring, but right around 1:05 when he starts firing the pistol, it’s just plain awesome!

If you can picture the last movie you watched where someone fires a pistol in slow motion…the movement of the slide, the explosion of the bullet from the barrel with the shell being ejected and the lingering puff of smoke! Just picture double of all that, and that’s what’s in the video.

Here’s a link to the double barrel pistol on Arsenal Firearms.

Triple Threat triple barrel shotgunOut with the old….in with the new!  For those of you who currently own a double barreled shotgun, you are no longer the coolest in town. The triple barreled shotgun is now the new king, at least it is for me. Three barrels of pure awesomeness!

The Triple Barrel Shotgun

A Triple Barrel Shotgun just makes sense right?! Think about it. Regulation in most places in the US state that a hunter can have no more than three shells loaded in their shotgun while hunting. So what have we done? We all use the traditional pump action shotguns such as the Winchester 870 or the Mossberg 500.

Why not just avoid the pump altogether and produce a triple barrel shotgun. Three shots, with no pump!

So here are some specs on the Triple Barrel Shotgun made by Chiappa Firearms.

There are currently two different models:

The Triple Crown, triple barrel shotgun: This is the model for hunting and sport shooting. It’s longer, with all three barrels at 28″ in length. It has a full stock with a total length of 45″.

Triple Crown triple barrel shotgun

The Triple Threat, triple barrel shotgun: This is the model for home protection, for the most part. It’s barrel measure at 18″ with a total length of 28″. The wooden stock can actually be partly disassembled, making it a handheld shotgun.

Triple Threat triple barrel shotgun

Of course, these triple barreled shotguns are chambered for 12 gauge shells which fire one at a time starting on the bottom left, over to the bottom right and then to the top barrel. There’s no barrel selector, which is why I would almost prefer using the triple barrel over a traditional pump action. It’s virtually a three shot semi-automatic.

Once the shells are fired, there’s currently not an ejector built in, but there is an extractor. That’s sort of helpful for those of us who like to clean up our shells as we go, but in a rush, not so helpful.

triple barrel shotgun with three side by side barrelsIs this the first Triple Barrel Shotgun?

You might be wondering if this is the first triple barrel shotgun every made, and the answer is no. Absolutely not. Heck, there are quadruple barrel and dozen barrel versions of the shotgun.

However, there are a few differences, at least that I’m aware of, which separate the Chiappa triple barrel shotgun from previous versions.

First off, it’s under 9lbs, with the Triple Crown weighing in at 8.7lbs.

triple barrel shotgun will two on topSecond, the barrels are swapped. On older versions of the triple barrel shotgun, there were two barrels on top and one on the bottom, or three side by side. On the Chiappa, there are two barrels on the bottom with one on top. Also, with a fiber optic site at the end of the top barrel, it gives you the targeting feel of a regular pump action shotgun.

And Third, each barrel has it’s own choke, which are standard Rem Chokes.

In conclusion, you’d better believe that this one is going down on my HUGE list of “Guns to Own!” The triple barrel shotgun from Chiappa has great reviews and is definitely one of those unique weapons to add to your own personal armory. Suggested retail price is right around $1,600.

floor vent gun safeCall me crazy, a dooms-day prepper, paranoid or tell me that I watch too many action flicks, because I’m all about expecting the best, but preparing for the worst. If you’ve been listening, not just to the news, but on the internet and to people you meet, we never expect crazy things to happen in our lives, but when it does, it’s always better to be ready for it.

Most of the stories I hear, the victims weren’t ready for it. Let’s be the rare exception!

And in my book, part of being ready for such an event within my home is properly concealing my firearms in strategic areas. Heck, we’ve all seen the movies where the guns are taped underneath the sink or are in the tank of the toilet. Sure, they’re concealed, but in my home, that’s an easy find for my two year old.

A good gun safe, from a tactical point of view, is both concealed and easily accessible, yet, is safe enough to protect your own children from injuring themselves.

Concealed and Hidden Gun Safe Ideas for Your Home

So what I’ve done is researched the gun safe and found some pretty original creations out there. We’ve all seen the typical gun safe. They’re green, about four feet tall and have a keyhole in the door, usually right below the “Cabelas” logo! Others are the size of a tank with a huge pirate ship wheel on the front.

But the non-typical gun safe is concealed in the ordinary things we use every single day of our lives, and that’s what you’ll find in these images.

I’m sure there are others out there, so please share them with me and I’ll add them to the gallery as I get them.

The one that won my vote was the Pepsi Machine gun safe. If there were only a way to get a pistol, or even a hand grenade from the dispenser when the “Mountain Dew” button was pushed.

Babysitters with GunsIf you’re anything like I am, by the time Friday rolls around, I’m ready for a night away from the kids! It’s time to call up the babysitter and head out on the town with my significant other for a little R and R!

You know what I mean?

We’ve actually made a habit out of it. Every week, we take the time to go out on a date, just the two of us, without the kids. It’s an extremely healthy, relationship building habit to adapt, and if you’re not doing it already, or something close to it, I highly recommend it. You and your spouse absolutely deserve it.

So, for those of you who are going on regular dates with your spouse, what do you do for a babysitter?

As for Amy and I, we have my parents and each of us has a sister who all live in the same town. So whenever we need a babysitter, most of the time, our kids end up going to Grandma’s house.

You might already be doing the same. But for many, it’s not always that easy. And that’s where the word, “Babysitter” comes into play.

We’ve been there! When you live in an area away from family, sometimes finding a babysitter can be tough. We all know the horror stories of the babysitters who do nothing but chew bubblegum and chat on the phone with their friends instead of actually watching your kids. And believe it or not, that still happens, and some parents are oblivious to it. Just because someone is nice doesn’t mean they’re a good babysitter.

When we lived in a small town called Pinetop, here in Arizona, we lucked out and had some pretty good babysitters. They lived just across the street from us, so if they needed anything, they could always call on their parents for immediate help. Most of the time, when we arrived home from our date, not only were they interacting with our kids, but the dishes were done.

Bonus!

Here are a few questions to think about when choosing a babysitter:

  • Does she know who to call if something happens?
  • Does she have any experience?
  • What are her parents like?
  • Does she do well in school?
  • Does she attend church regularly?
  • Is she even good with kids?

Chynna posing with a gunAnd I’m sure you have some questions of your own.

Here’s another question you can ask yourself, a little more on the serious side:

If the need arises, does she know how to handle a gun?

If you trust your babysitter enough, have approval from her parents and feel comfortable with it yourself, tell them where they can find your pistol should the need arise. Most teenage girls have no desire to handle a weapon, but wouldn’t you feel a little more secure if your babysitter knew how to handle a gun?

This is kind of the same concept of allowing our children’s teachers at school carry weapons.

Very controversial.

With that said, here’s a picture of Chynna, who was our babysitter once upon a time. She’s since grown up a bit and is doing some modeling (obviously), but it’s nice to know that she can handle a weapon should the need be. I’m not quite sure if she knew how to back then, but my guess is she probably did.

So if you’re looking for a model, actress or a nanny, who knows how to handle a weapon, she comes highly recommended.

Custom Desert Eagle .50 Caliber PistolSay hello to my little friend, the Desert Eagle .50 Caliber pistol! The Desert Eagle is manufactured by Magnum Research, Inc and is a mean machine. Although the .50 A.E. is the popular choice when it comes to the Desert Eagle, don’t forget that it can also be chambered in .357 magnum and .44 magnum.

Desert Eagle MagazinesThe Desert Eagle can be customized in several different finishes, from black to brushed chrome. You can also order customized hand grips as well. And depending on your finish of choice, you might as well get matching magazines as well.

For home protection, the simple appearance of the Desert Eagle is enough to intimidate an intruder, not to mention the shear power if one should ever have to pull the trigger. Even if you should miss the perpetrator, at a close range, the flash coming from the end of the barrel would make anyone feel like they’ve been shot.

The Desert Eagle has also been a popular choice in Hollywood, being used in many popular films such as the Matrix Trilogy, Predator and many others.

Desert Eagle in the Matrix

Personally, I don’t own one yet, the key phrase being “yet,” but it’s on my bucket list!

U.S. Survival AR-7As I was researching .22 caliber rifles today I found myself looking at the U.S. Survival AR-7, made by Henry Repeating Arms. It is a low caliber survival rifle used by pilots in the Air Force, which has carried into the civilian world as well. Just think of all the times you’ve wanted to take a rifle with you on a hike or a camping trip, but didn’t care to lug it around. How convenient would it be to throw this into your back pack?

U.S. Survival AR-7It weighs a whopping 2.5 lbs and is only 16.5 inches long when stowed. It can easily fit in a back pack, boat compartment, in an airplane or even in your 72 hour emergency kit. Since it is chambered in .22LR, you can carry a significant amount of ammo with you without adding a ton of extra weight to your load.

The biggest eye catcher of this rifle is the way it stows. You can disassemble the entire rifle and it stows in the stock. Another neat feature about the rifle, is the stock is completely water proof. So, even if you run into trouble with a raging river, boating accident or something similar, your U.S. Survival AR-7rifle is designed to float.

Also, the barrel is coated in a sturdy ABS plastic and coated with Teflon to protect it from corrosion. It’s the ultimate, light weight survival rifle….and I’ve gotta have one! Here’s the link directly to the AR-7.

The price tag on this one is suggested at $275. Completely affordable.

Hunting Elk with Mountain LionI stumbled across this photo a week or so ago. My wife actually discovered it on Facebook. Good ole Facebook! I’m sure you see the Mountain Lion in the background. The story is: this guy is hunting, shoots an Elk and since he’s by himself, he doesn’t have anyone to take a picture of him in front of his Elk. So, he sets the automatic timer on his camera, gets positioned behind the Elk and smiles for the camera.

So he guts his Elk, packs it up and takes it away. It wasn’t until he was already home that he noticed the Mountain Lion in the background of his photo. The flash must have scared the cougar away and may have been the only thing that saved the hunters life!

In times like those, when it’s pitch black outside or getting close to it, having a pistol on your hip may not be able to help you a whole lot. If you can’t see it coming, you’re toast!

Another story, my father-in-law was on a deer hunt in Arizona one year and had started to clean his deer. He stood up to take a break and out of the corner of his eye, noticed a Mountain Lion on a ledge just above him. He had just enough time raise his rifle and fire from the hip as the Mountain Lion lunged toward him. They’re not only extremely quiet, but quick.

You can never be too careful…and I bet the guy in this picture was a bit sick to his stomach after seeing what lurked from behind for the first time. Crazy stuff!

How to Survive in the DesertThe desert, specifically in the summer months, is a tough place to find yourself stranded. In Arizona, Nevada and parts of New Mexico, temperatures can reach upwards of 120 degrees. In this kind of heat, you’ll need to take certain necessary and life saving precautions in order to survive in the desert.

Desert Survival Tip #1

Stay out of the sun! As mentioned above, temperatures can sky rocket in the summer months during the day. Find some sort of shelter to shield yourself from it’s rays. Ideas for shelter can include the shady side of a wash or underneath a rock overhang. In certain areas of the American desert, you’ll find Mesquite trees, Yucca plans or Saguaro cactus that can provide enough shade to escape the sun. Stay out of the sun as much as you possibly can during the day.

Desert Survival Tip #2

Do all your work and traveling at night. If you find a need to construct a better shelter, do it at night. You’ll not only preserve your body fluids, but you’ll also have more energy. Temperatures in the desert can change thirty degrees from day to night. You will get more accomplished in the dark than you ever will in the sun and heat of the day.

Desert Survival Tip #3

prickly pear cactusFind water! We’ve all seen the movies. We should all know that you can get moisture from certain types of cactus. In the American desert, I would recommend Prickly Pear cactus and Barrel cactus. The only precaution to take with cactus, are the thorns. Not just the long ones that can easily be seen, it’s the tiny little splinter like thorns that will be your worst nightmare if gotten into. They are so small, you’ll need tweezers to remove them. And they come by the tens and hundreds.

What you’re looking for in a Prickly Pear, is the red part that looks like a purple oval shaped plum. It’s extremely tasty. If you’ve ever been to Arizona, you might have had “Prickly Pear Jelly” on your toast. It’s to die for….but not while stranded in the desert. When removing it from the cactus, don’t grab it with your hand. Use a sharp stick or a knife if you have one. You can burn the thorns off the outside and then peel the skin off. The inside is what you want to eat.

barrel cactusBarrel cactus is a short round cactus that can grow several feet tall. With a barrel cactus, you’ll just want to cut several inches off the top to expose the insides. You’ll find a hearty, moist meat inside similar to the color of Honeydew, but it’s not going to be sweet.

There are also various rigs you can setup that will allow you to collect moisture as it evaporates with the extreme heat. But we’ll save that for another article. At times, you can find water in washes or in rocky areas (if it’s rained recently). Don’t go searching for an oasis, you’d be wasting your time.

Desert Survival Tip #4

The dangers of the American desert.

  1. western diamondback rattlesnakeRattlesnakes – Also known as the Diamondback Rattlesnake. It’s dangerous. It’s venom, if bitten, will corrode your flesh. If you fall victim to a snake bite, get proper medical care within thirty minutes or amputation or death may occur. At times, it will rattle is rattlers when it is alarmed, but don’t depend on this to happen every time. They don’t always rattle and some of the smaller ones, the more dangerous ones, haven’t fully developed their rattlers yet. Some tips about rattlesnakes: When they aren’t coiled up, they can strike about half of their body length….and they’re fast. Don’t think you’re faster. You’re not. When coiled up, they can strike further. But if you think you can kill the snake, it’s a great source of meat, and the skin can be used to collect water. I know it sounds gross, but if you have nothing else to collect water with, it will do the job.
  2. Spiders are abundant in certain areas. They need water to survive as well. So watch for critters when you’re near water. Most Tarantulas you see in the American desert aren’t dangerous. They bite alright, but their venom is meant to stun their prey and isn’t potent enough to stun a person. Black Widows are also found in the desert and everyone knows the effects if bitten. You will most likely see Wolf Spiders, which are large, grey, hairy spiders that are extremely quick. They bite but are harmless.
  3. scorpionScorpions – Rule of thumb, if you’re bitten by anything poisonous, the smaller it is, the worse it will be. They don’t know when to shut off the venom. In the case of a scorpion, you’re stung, not bitten. It’s their tail you have to watch out for, not their pinchers. However, unless you’re allergic to scorpion venom, you’ll recover. You may experience numbness and some aching, but you’ll recover fully in a week or two. If you have Benadryl, take it. It will help.
  4. Coyotes live in the desert as well but will run at the site of you. They are more scavengers than they are hunters. I wouldn’t worry about them too much. If you feel more comfortable, fire will keep most animals away at night.

In the desert, just be sure to shake out your shoes or clothing items before putting them back on. Scorpions and spiders love to hang out in moist shoes.

Desert Survival Tip #5

gila monsterFood is scarce. As I mentioned earlier, snakes are a great source of meat. I wouldn’t really attempt to chase down a rabbit. They’re just too quick. However, if you have a pistol, rifle or bow and arrow, you will have yourself a good meal. You may also run into prairie dogs, gophers and other smaller animals. There are always Quail and Dove in the desert which can provide good meat. There are also many types of lizards and insects you can eat. The only poisonous lizard in the desert is the Gila Monster. It’s mostly black with yellow or orange blotchy colors across it’s back. I would just steer clear if you run into a Gila Monster. They’re not worth the effort.

Desert Survival Tip #6

This is more of a “Just in case” tip. Before you leave on any trip, make sure someone knows of your plans. If you find yourself stranded in the desert, and don’t know where you are, stay put. If you know where you are, travel at night. You’ll be able to travel ten times the distance in the cooler temperatures. Put together a “72 Hour Kit” and keep it in your car. There will be more information coming in a future article on the items to include in a kit. And most importantly, don’t panic. Keep your head on straight and use your head. Making mistakes in the desert can cost you your life.
